We as YIP (International Youth Initiative Program) participants are going to SEKEM:

http://www.sekem.com/en/index/

SEKEM is a sustainable community that now exists for 40 years. In 1977, Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish founded a new agricultural and social settlement on northeast of Cairo.

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

SEKEM Initiative was founded with the vision of sustainable development and giving back to the community. It aims to develop individual, society and environment through a holistic process which integrates ecology, economy, societal and cultural life. Combining the views of Islam and Antrophosophy.

It also combines the inner-humanistic and outer-scientific perspectives that are forming the two sides of the “sustainability coin”.

The organization now includes

• Biodynamic farms;

• Trading companies for produce and processed foods (Hator and Libra), herbal teas and beauty products (ISIS Organic), medicinal herbs and medicines (ATOS Pharma), and organic cotton products (NatureTex);

• Medical center;

• School; based on the principles of Waldorf pedagogy open to pupils from any religious or ethnic background;

• Community school; catering specifically to the needs of children from disadvantaged groups;

• Nursery

• Vocational training center;

• College (Mahad Adult Education Training Institute) and research center (SEKEM Academy for Applied Art and Sciences);

• Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development

We will do an internship In SEKEM and learn about a certain area of this very interesting community.

Feel free to ask questions!
